MIAMI (Reuters) - Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan has a "significant tear" to an elbow ligament and may need surgery, the team said on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old pitcher will rest and then do rehab work before making a decision on whether the injury requires surgery, said a report on the team's official website (http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com).

The former All Star faced one batter in the Spring training game against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday before being withdrawn after complaining of soreness in his elbow.

Nathan then had a scan on Monday amid fears he could be ruled out for the season.

The Twins were American League Central division winners last season.
